Red Samsung Galaxy S 3 now available in the UK

Just last week Samsung dropped a whole range of new colors for the Galaxy S 3, but as you would expect not everyone seems to be able to get all of them, everywhere. In the UK at least, the Garnet Red variety is available should you desire one. The phone is exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, but seems to be available at the same price as the other colors, and across the major networks provided by the retailer.

Samsung Announces Pink Galaxy Note for South Korea

The pink Samsung Galaxy Note was shown off at this year’s CeBIT in Germany at the beginning of last month but there were no details about the availability of the “happy” colored device.
Berry Pink is the official color of the phone and it was announced for the South Korean market. Aside from the color, everything is the same, including the specs and the S-Pen (which is also pink by the way, as you can see in the render above). There are no details about exact pricing and availability but those who waited for the shade can now prepare to purchase one and add it to those five million already sold.

Motorola and Nextel launch the i867 Push To Talk smartphone in Brazil

Motorola have pulled the wraps of their latest entry level device, the i867. This one is destined for Brazil via Nextel, and will be available in a couple of promotions on the carrier.
So what do we have? One of the biggest features that they're pushing with this device is the Push To Talk two-way radio. Such features are still pretty desirable around the world, despite not being something we usually look for around here.
Otherwise, specs are definitely low end. 3.1-inch screen, an included 2GB MicroSD card -- support is there for 32GB though -- and Android 2.1. Thats right, it launches with Eclair. Low end or not, that's pretty unacceptable in 2012. The i867 is available from Nextel now.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus N launches in Germany

Samsung has launched yet another 7-inch tablet, and this time it's a redesigned version of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus for the German market. Similar to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 N, the Tab 7.0 Plus N is redesigned  in order to work around Apple's legal shenanigans. The most noticeable change is that metallic trim around the edge of the device, which gives the front face of the device a noticeably different appearance.
Aside from the new look, the internals are the same as they always were -- you've got a 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 3.2 Honeycomb (with TouchWiz) on a 1024x600 display. Prices start at €499 for the Wifi-only version, and go up to €569 for Wifi and 3G.
The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus N joins a growing list of 7-inch Samsung tablets, including the original Galaxy Tab, the Tab 7.0 Plus, the Tab 7.7 and the recently-announced Galaxy Tab 2.

New LG CX2 render shows slimmer handset in white, with new software

With Mobile World Congress less than two weeks away, we're starting to see images of even more unannounced devices leaking out online. The latest to appear is LG's successor to the Optimus 3D, the "CX2", or Optimus 3D MAX. This new leaked render shows a thin device in white, running what seems to be an updated version of LG's Optimus UI. LG's software is long overdue a visual refresh, so hopefully this new version will bring some much-needed improvements.
Alongside the new render, Korean site ETNews gave details of the device's size, weight and screen resolution. The site claims that the new device will sport a higher resolution 3D display, compared to the Optimus 3D's WVGA offering. Apparently LG has brought the device down to a thickness of just 9.8mm, and shaved 20 grams off its weight, too. The reported resolution increase is interesting, as it contradicts earlier reports that LG was sticking with WVGA for its second 3D phone. However, given the company's push towards 720p displays for its high end devices (as well as the reduction in visible resolution required for glasses-free 3D), we wouldn't be surprised to see a 720p IPS panel in this thing when it launches.
We'll know more about LG's next flagship device in just a few days, assuming the rumors of a MWC unveiling hold true.

Motorola Droid 4 available now on Verizon for $199 on contract

The Motorola Droid 4 is now available from Verizon's website (and will be in stores in just a few short hours) for $199 on contract. As the name implies, this is the fourth phone in the line that for all intents and purposes put Android on the map.
As you'll recall from our hands-on at CES, the Droid 4 takes the classic Droid stylings -- a larger
screen and a physical keyboard -- and refines them even further. From the front, it looks like a cousin to the new Droid RAZR MAXX, albeit a tad smaller with a 4-inch display at qHD (540x960) resolution. Slide open that 4-inch display and you've got what might well be the best physical keyboard on any smartphone. The keys are backlit and laser-cut and are extremely easy to navigate.
One odd feature of the Droid 4 is on the backside. You can remove the battery cover -- and must do so if you want to get to the microSIM card (which is what provides the 4G LTE data) and microSD card. But it takes a weird little unlocking tool (included with the phone) to do so. But even then you can't actually remove the 1785 mAh battery -- at least not without likely breaking anything. That could be a deal-breaker for many. Check out our Droid 4 walkthrough video for more on that.
The phone's running Android 2.3.6, and Verizon is already promising to update it to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Other specs of note:
  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 1.3MP front-facing camerea
  • Serve as a 4G LTE hot spot for up to eight other devices.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Look for our full Droid 4 review in the coming days.

HTC, Vodafone Germany to launch first 4G LTE phone -- the HTC Velocity

Vodafone Germany customers will soon be able to pick up the network's first 4G LTE smartphone, the HTC Velocity, according to reports from German site Computer Woche. The device will be familiar to readers in the U.S., as stateside it's known as the AT&T HTC Vivid. As well as supporting the insane speeds we've come to expect from LTE networks, the Velocity also sports HSPA+ connectivity up to 42.2 Mb/sec, alongside good old-fashioned 2G and 3G.
Internally, the device is similar to many of HTC's other high-end smartphones. There's a 1.5GHz dual-core chip inside, along with a full gigabyte of RAM, a 4.5-inch qHD (960x540) screen and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, backed up by HTC Sense 3.5. Frequency-wise, the HTC Velocity supports LTE on 800/2600MHz in addition to UMTS/HSPA on 900/2100MHz, meaning it should work on other LTE networks across Europe once they start rolling out.
So it's an HTC Vivid for Europe. Speaking of which, you can check out our review of that device to get an idea of what you'll be dealing with if you pick up an HTC Velocity in the future. We'll keep you posted with any release date or pricing info as it becomes available.

'Optimus 3D MAX' branding rumored for next LG 3D phone

Earlier this week we saw reports that LG is preparing a successor to its Optimus 3D smartphone, to be unveiled at next month's Mobile World Congress. The LG CX2, as it's apparently codenamed, was to ship with a 1.2GHz CPU, 4.3-inch 3D WVGA NOVA display and dual 5MP cameras. Leaked renders also appeared, showing a device much thinner than the veritable brick that was the original Optimus 3D.
Today GSM Israel says it's learned from a "very reliable source" that the CX2's official branding will be "Optimus 3D MAX" (spelled the old-fashioned way, with just one X). If true, the new name would fit a device which appears to be more a refinement of last year's Optimus 3D than anything revolutionary.
It's likely we'll see more of the Optimus 3D MAX, or whatever it's called, in just a few weeks time at Mobile World Congress, so stay tuned.

Official Met Office weather application available now

One thing we aren't short of on Android is weather applications. In the UK, the Met Office are probably the best source of weather forecasts. These now come to Android with the launch of the official Met Office application.
What you get is some pretty detailed weather maps, with a range of forecasts between three hours and a full five-day forecast. The maps are also interactive, and display national severe weather warnings. It also touts UV forecast maps, for those rare days in the UK when the sun shines.
There are some known issues already with the application involving the pressure map layer. The developers have pledged that this will be resolved in a future update. In the meantime you'll find download links after the break.

Sony Xperia Ion unlocked pre-order price emerges

It's been barely a couple of weeks since AT&T and Sony took the wraps off the Xperia Ion at CES, but already the device is starting to show up for pre-order, along with early pricing information. Right now Negri Electronics is listing the (unlocked, SIM-free) Ion with a tentative pre-order price of $569.50. Of course, having an unlocked version of an AT&T phone isn't particularly useful in the US, as you'll be limited to EDGE connectivity if you try to use this thing on T-Mobile.
Negri's spec list also shows that the Ion supports 3G/HSPA on 2100MHz, which means that if you plan on using your Ion in Europe or parts of Asia, you won't be stuck on 2G. For more on the Ion, as well as its international cousin the Xperia S.

Photon 4G owners wanted -- Motorola is looking for software testers

Motorola has made an official request for "Pre-release software testers" of an unknown update for the Motorola Photon 4G.  This is standard practice for Motorola, who likes to slowly roll out their final builds to a select few in what they call a "soak test".  This gives Motorola (and the carriers) a bigger set of eyeballs looking for any potential bugs that limited internal testing just didn't find.
In the past we've seen soak tests for updates both big and small, so there's no knowing exactly what this one is going to be.  We can't see the future, but I don't think this one will be Ice Cream Sandwich.  But any update is good news as long as it makes things better.  Motorola needs a thousand testers, and I think you guys are up to the challenge -- hit the source link and sign up!

Sony Ericsson ST25i 'Kumquat' pic leaks, is Mini-Me to Xperia S's Dr. Evil

We saw plenty of the Xperia S before it officially surfaced at CES, and we've already seen leaked photos of the MT27i "Pepper", along with a purported leaked roadmap for other Sony phones. Today, though, XperiaBlog has the first image of at what is reportedly the Sony (Ericsson) ST25i "Kumquat", a mid to high-end Android phone with a 3.5-inch display and a familiar industrial design.
The "Kumquat", which according to the leaked roadmap is due this April at a ~€260 price point, is apparently powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, with a 5MP camera and a qHD (960x540) display. If the rumored specs and price are correct -- and admittedly that's still a pretty big "if" -- this device could be very tempting for those looking for a smaller, more portable smartphone with high-end specs.
Hopefully we'll see more of the "Kumquat" at Sony's Mobile World Congress presentation in just a few weeks, where the manufacturer looks set to reveal more of its 2012 line-up.

Motorola Xoom UK price slashed again, now £249.99

If you've been following recent Motorola Xoom developments, you'll know that the first "Google Experience" tablet has just been updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Alongside the update, Carphone Warehouse, one of the main sellers of Xooms in the UK, has cut the price of the Wifi-only model to £249.99. This is a £50 drop from the earlier RRP of £299.99, and the latest in a long line of Xoom price drops which has seen the tablet gradually fall from the July price of £399.
It might not be as sleek as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, or as fast as the ASUS Transformer Prime, but £250 for a 10-inch, dual-core ICS tablet isn't a bad deal at all if you ask us. UK readers, would you be tempted to drop £250 on a Xoom at this point? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

White Galaxy Nexus caught out in the wild

We've had the first retailers bring it up, we've had the first real promotional shots, and now we have the first real, actual shots of the white Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The folks over at the AndroidHD Blog in Italy have snagged themselves some photos of the as-yet unreleased device. Worth noting is that as in the official renders, it's only the sides and the rear of the device that are white -- the front remains black as on the original "titanium silver" version.
In the UK at least, we're expecting to see this on sale from the week commencing Mar. 6. If you're a sucker for a white phone, hit the source link below for more pictures.

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX coming to Verizon Jan. 26

We went hands-on with the Droid RAZR MAXX at CES 2012 and well -- it's a Droid RAZR with a 3300 mAh battery taking place of the original 1780 mAh power source and while that's impressive in its own right, the most impressive point is that it doesn't add any extra bulk. That said; If you skipped out on the original Droid RAZR due to battery concerns, come Jan. 26 you can pick up the Droid RAZR MAXX from Verizon Wireless for $299 with a two-year contract.

Asus UK confirming ICS update for original Transformer coming soon

Asus UK have taken to their Facebook page to let us all know the state of their Ice Cream Sandwich update for the original Transformer. To cut a long story short, it's good news.
They're confirming the update is incoming, although exact date is still TBC. What they have said is that they're working hard on getting the OTA update out as soon as possible after the Jan. 12 launch with the Transformer Prime.

Motorola Droid 4 pops out once again for some pretty pictures

Pictures of the Motorola Droid 4 have been around for as long as late October, so we're really not surprised to see more of them popping up. And now Technobuffalo has quite the new crop -- or, rather, a new crop of pictures of a non-working dummy phone. Not a whole lot there we haven't seen 13 different ways already -- most recently on Best Buy's website. Now all we need is some sort of official announcement, perhaps.
